Poultry, beef cattle, pigs, maize, sunn hemp, chia, sweet potato and general horticulture

I’m Mrs Teverai Chigogo-Nhapi, owner of a 101ha farm in Darwendale, Zvimba District. I do poultry, beef cattle, pigs, maize, sunn hemp, chia, sweet potato and general horticulture. I am a Bsc in Management and Entrepreneurial Development holder, as well as a Diploma in Banking. I have been involved in the women’s economic empowerment space for more than 20 years now.

Inspiration

I am a very independent person. Agriculture has given me the room which I could not get as an employee. I am an entrepreneur at heart.

Farmer Success

I have served as a Zimbabwe Poultry Association (ZPA) board member for almost 4 years and also founded the African Women Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP), Zimbabwe Chapter, the Zimbabwe Women Poultry and small livestock Farmers Trust (Zwpft) and I’ve represented the country regionally and internationally. My poultry project was showcased to international delegates during the International Women's Day Commemorations in 2014, where more than 200 delegates were hosted at our farm. I have 35 pigs, 100 cattle, placing 60000 broilers and have just harvested 35 tons of maize and 3 tons of Sunn hemp. I am also a beneficiary of the TranZDVC project, I have just been awarded 20 conventional artificial insermination kits.

Advice to aspiring farmers

Farming is not a stroll in the park. Farming is a business. Never expect to make it in a season or two.
